Source: prices published on detailers’ own websites, read in September 2026. Anything under $200 is excluded as a spray sealant rather than a coating install. Florida is the only state breakdown we have; the vehicle-size rows are national, and a “n/a” means we have no Florida figure.
Other published ranges are wider and older, which is why you should not rely on one number:
- Cars.com (June 2024): roughly $1,000 for a professional application.
- Jalopnik (February 2025): about $750 to $5,000 for a high-quality professional coating, with paint correction extra.
- Consumer cost guides (2026): roughly $700 to $2,000 for most vehicles.
What you pay for: durability tiers
The biggest driver of price is the warranty the shop sells. Advertised national prices, grouped by stated durability:
| Advertised durability | Typical range | Median |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1 year | $250 – $450 | about $350 |
| 1 year | $450 – $900 | about $600 |
| 2 years | $600 – $950 | about $750 |
| 3-4 years | $700 – $1,200 | about $950 |
| 5-7 years | $850 – $1,500 | about $1,200 |
| 8+ years | $900 – $1,900 | about $1,500 |
| Lifetime | $1,000 – $2,000 | about $1,500 |
These are advertised terms, not measured lifespans, and they do not guarantee service life, savings or resale value. Ask who honors the warranty, what maintenance it requires (inspections, approved wash products) and what voids it.
What changes the quote
Vehicle size. A truck has more surface area than a coupe. National advertised medians run from about $1,000 for sedans to about $1,250 for trucks and large SUVs.
Paint condition and correction. Cars.com notes that a coating does not fix flaws already in the paint, so swirls, haze and oxidation stay unless the paint is corrected first. Consumer cost guides say correction can add roughly $250 to $750 or more. See our paint correction cost guide for what each stage involves.
Coverage. Ask whether the price covers paint only or also glass, wheels, trim and the door jambs. These may be separate line items.
Brand and installer certification. Many installers are certified by coating makers such as Ceramic Pro, Gtechniq or XPEL, and a manufacturer-backed warranty often requires a certified installer. Certification does not by itself show that a coating is better; it tells you who stands behind the warranty.
New car or used car. A new car with clean factory paint needs less prep than a five-year-old car that has lived outside in Florida.
Spray “ceramic” versus a professional coating
A consumer cost guide lists a “paint sealant or ceramic coating” add-on at $50 to $100 inside a detail. That is a spray product that lasts months, not years. Cars.com describes consumer spray bottles at about $10 to $50 and paste or liquid products at $25 to $150, and Jalopnik says an off-the-shelf coating lasts about two to three years if you prep carefully, versus about three to five years for a properly applied professional coating. A shop that advertises “ceramic coating” for $150 is probably selling a sealant.
Florida factors that matter for coating
- UV. The EPA’s UV Index guide (EPA, 2004) lists Miami at 10-11 (very high to extreme) in summer and 4 in winter. Shops market coatings as UV-resistant. Treat that as a claim to ask about, not a guarantee: we found no independent test, a coating still needs washing and it may not stop fading.
- Lovebugs. UF/IFAS advises removing lovebug remains within about 24 hours and says waxed paint cleans up more easily. Installers say a coated surface rinses clean more easily; we found no independent test of that, and the same 24-hour rule applies.
- Salt air. Coastal cars need regular washing with a pH-appropriate soap. Jalopnik stresses that a coating still requires regular washing with dedicated soap to perform.
- Heat and humidity. Coatings need a controlled cure period. Ask where the car will sit during the cure window and what the shop does if a thunderstorm hits. Mobile coating jobs depend on shade, power and weather.
- Hurricane season. A coating does not protect a car from flooding, hail or debris. For physical impact, see paint protection film.
- Snowbird season. Part-time residents often book coatings before they head north. Ask for a written drop-off and pickup date.
Questions to ask before you pay
- What is the exact product, and how many layers?
- Is paint correction included, and what stage?
- Are glass, wheels and trim included?
- What does the written warranty cover, and who honors it if the shop closes?
- What maintenance is required to keep the warranty valid, and what does it cost?
- Where does the car cure, and for how long?
Frequently asked questions
Does ceramic coating pay off?
It can. Cars.com describes water beading and protection against chemical stains and dirt, and Jalopnik calls a professional coating a great solution for serious paint protection, but neither promises that it pays for itself. For the full trade-offs in Florida, read Is ceramic coating worth it in Florida?
How much does a 7-year ceramic coating cost?
The advertised 5-7 year tier runs about $850 to $1,500 nationally, with a median near $1,200. We do not have Florida-specific prices for this tier.
Can I wax over ceramic coating?
Usually not. Ceramic Pro, a major coating maker, says its coating does not need wax, that wax will not bond to it, and that owners should not apply wax or paint sealant after washing. It also tells owners to avoid soaps with wax or petroleum distillates or a pH outside 5 to 9, to wash about every two weeks and to skip brush car washes. Other brands have their own rules, so follow your installer’s written maintenance instructions: warranty terms can require approved products.
Is PPF better than ceramic coating?
They do different things. Jalopnik says a ceramic coating does not prevent scratches or rock chips and that paint protection film is needed for that. Makers and installers say a coating adds gloss and makes the car easier to clean. See PPF costs in Florida.
Can I apply ceramic coating myself?
Yes, but prep is the hard part. Cars.com says the paint must be spotless before application and that the coating is tough to remove. Jalopnik says DIY products demand significant prep and generally do not last as long as professional ones.
What is the best brand of ceramic coating?
No independent test we found ranks brands. Installer skill, prep and warranty support may matter as much as the label. Compare written warranties from certified installers.
